Canvas seems pretty similar to Blackboard. But it is simple, and easy to use. While taking the course I learned how to add files, add students, put them into groups, make tests/quizzes, set up grading tools, and create discussion boards. Learning how to set up groups seems easy. With Canvas having a random group assignment feature makes things easier on the teacher and the students. The only feature that seems tedious is inviting students to your course. If there is a list in the invite section and there is no comma separating the students an error will appear. Canvas will also embed YouTube videos that have been hyperlinked.
So you all probably know we are shifting to Canvas next year. Apparently TCC already uses the LMS (learning management system) and I've heard good things from a few teachers. I've also heard very negative things from Instructional Design folk (people in my program). Here is a link to FSU's Canvas Transition page. There is a section just for students: https://distance.fsu.edu/instructors/fsu-canvas-transition
ReplyDeleteAs FSU will be transition to Canvas soon, do you think that is the right move and that it is better than BlackBoard? I am a little nervous about having to learn an entirely new system to work with, do you think students will have trouble making the transition?

It looks, from this article, as if many other schools are making the transition to Canvas as well. Do you think that this is a smart decision? I am very interested to see how this goes as it seems to be happening in mass.
